Contenuti del corso "Understanding political discourse":  What is Boris Johnson up to when he says: ‘Humanity are 5-1 down on the climate crisis.’? How was Shakespeare able to make the word “honourable” drip with sarcasm? What is “The Hill” slam poet Amanda Gorman alluded to? Why do mere words rouse people to act? Or cause them to turn away in disinterest? What do we need to know to understand when we are being manipulated? And why is this important in our times?
This short course – Understanding Political Discourse - will focus on some fundamentals of political discourse in English. Beginning with an overview of some of the key elements that make a speech great, the class will then take a blitz through history and explore the topic looking at different aspects of famous speeches. From literature we will look at Marc Anthony in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar for pathos and sarcasm, from history, at Queen Elizabeth I's Tilbury speech for her rallying positive imagery, from wartime at Churchill’s use of anaphora, from gender politics, at Hillary Clinton for her trustworthiness and Julia Gillard’s lethal repetition of the words “this man”, to the present time with Boris Johnson’s football and Kermit the frog analogies, to the critical phenomenon of timing (Kairos) with Colin Kaepernick and Nike and we will finish with literature once again and Amanda Gorman’s allusions in her 2021 reading of “The Hill..” at President Joe Biden’s inauguration ceremony.
The course will feature in-class workshops to identify rhetorical features and analyze their use. The course will culminate in a final submission at the end of the course in which students will choose and critique a speech (or part of a speech) which they have themselves chosen.

Contenuti del corso "Creative Writing": The course will focus on the fundamentals of creative writing. Beginning with the key elements of a great story, the class will then explore the topics of character development, plot development, dialogue, exposition, point of view, theme and motif, pace, voice, and suspense. The course will feature in-class workshops for brainstorming ideas for characters, plots and themes while also giving students time to work on their writing skills. During the course, students will be asked to develop, write and present parts of a short story, a prologue or a first chapter (their choice). Class time will be used to analyze and critique student submissions. This writing process will culminate in a final submission at the end of the course.

Contenuti del corso "English Reading and writing Skills for Professional and Academic Purposes": corso di scrittura e comprensione testuale in lingua inglese volto a fornire ai partecipanti le competenze necessarie per affinare le loro abilità di lettura, interpretazione e produzione di testi specialistici o semi-specialistici in contesti accademici e professionali, con particolare riferimento ai settori del turismo, dei beni culturali, dell’educazione e della formazione. Il corso si concentrerà sui requisiti specifici e sulle convenzioni di scrittura proprie a tipologie testuali quali, ad esempio, il testo accademico, il testo argomentativo e la reportistica, allo scopo di fornire ai/lle partecipanti conoscenze pratiche ed esperienza diretta nella realizzazione di testi ben strutturati, coerenti e persuasivi. Al termine del corso, i/le partecipanti avranno sviluppato una ottima padronanza delle abilità di scrittura e comprensione testuale in lingua inglese nonché la capacità di produrre in autonomia documenti tipici degli ambiti accademici e professionali in questione.

Contenuti del corso "Lingua inglese: Linguaggio specialistico economico finanziario": questo corso esaminerà la terminologia e la grammatica relative al mondo aziendale, all’economia internazionale, alla finanza e alle banche. Appropriato per quegli studenti che hanno già acquisito un livello di inglese pari almeno a B1.
